What is the UN Charter Reform Coalition?
We are a group of individuals and civil society organizations advocating for reform of the United Nations Charter.
When the Charter was adopted in 1945, then U.S. President Harry Truman importantly stated:
“This Charter will be expanded and improved as time goes on. No one claims that it is now a final or a perfect instrument. It has not been poured into any fixed mold. Changing world conditions will require readjustments.”
We believe that amid the climate crisis, the inability to stop wars, and changing global power dynamics, readjustment is vital now to reaffirm our commitment to the United Nations and to ensure that the organization can effectively fulfill its role moving forward.
We are calling for states to agree to a General Conference to review the Charter and reform its fundamental structures, as provided for by Article 109 of the UN Charter.
The 3 pillars of our approach are:
Engaging member states
Mobilizing popular support
Setting the policy agenda
